Created in 2005 by Zoé Pauwels as a special edition and never reissued, Hommage à l’explorateur Sir Ernest Shackleton (A Tribute to the Explorer Sir Ernest Shackleton) is one of the most sought-after Hermès scarves, a true collector’s grail. It tells the story of the Endurance expedition (1914–1917): the ship trapped in the ice of the Weddell Sea, and a crew who all came home alive. Between two roped oars, Zoé Pauwels lays out the pack ice, the dog teams, the photographer with his plate camera, the penguins and the seals.

In this sky blue colourway, the scene takes on the look of an antique engraving: ice white, navy silhouettes, a sky blue border. A colourway that suits this polar design to perfection.

This scarf comes from the collection of a yachtswoman. It has travelled widely and keeps a few marks that cleaning could not remove, along with a few pulled threads, visible in the last photographs. No holes, no snags to the hand-rolled hem, and silk that has kept all its body.

A word from Diane

There is a lovely logic in this scarf coming to us from the collection of a yachtswoman. A design about men who sailed to the ends of the earth, worn by a woman who went to sea herself. It has travelled, it has been washed, something no collector would dare do with a grail, and it bears a few traces of that. But here it is, its colours intact, its hand-rolled hem impeccable. Perhaps the finest proof of what Hermès silk is: made to be lived in, not merely kept. Shackleton would surely have approved.
